Custom Body Powered Thumb Prosthesis
Custom prosthesis for complex clinical case of partial hand amputation
Employer: Shirley Ryan AbilityLab / Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago
Role: Research Engineer III
As part of the AbiltyLab, the Center for Bionic Medicine was a translational research group often working directly with clinicians in patient care. This project was a one of a kind custom prosthesis for a complex case of partial hand amputation.
Partial hand prostheses exist commercially, however partial hand limb deficiency tends to vary substantially between cases making it difficult to find off the shelf solutions for patients.
Wanting to maintain strength in the residual digits, we made a body-powered thumb which opposed the patient's fingers to support finer motor tasks.
